What's Your Kind of Keswick Break?

Holidays mean different things to different people. For some it's an action packed break full of adventure and new experiences whilst for others it's time to relax, unwind and take things easy. In this week's blog we've highlighted the different types of break you can enjoy in Keswick - pick and choose and create your own tailor-made holiday to suit just what you want to do.

Relaxing

Sometimes you just need to kick back and relax. Enjoy a trip to the spa or beauty salon, take a stroll through the park, a trip on the Derwentwater Launch or enjoy a drink outside one of the many cafes and watch the world go by. If pottering round the shops is your thing Keswick can offer some retail therapy as Keswick has a fantastic range of unique, independent shops and galleries.

Active

Keswick is a great base for an active or adventurous holiday. You might enjoy getting out onto the fells, mountain biking or perhaps taking part in a sporting event. Or maybe you prefer to try open water swimming, rock climbing or ghyll scrambling. If adventure is what you are looking for, there is no shortage of it here in Keswick. Take a look at our Adventure Keswick pages to see the wide range of activities on offer. You may have the confidence to go it alone but if you are looking to try something new or need some expert guidance then there are plenty of experienced instructors to help you. Take a look at our Keswick walking routes. We have free downloadable walks from Keswick as well as from some of the surrounding villages.

Romantic

Home and inspiration to famous romantic poets including Wordsworth, Shelley and Coleridge, Keswick is just the place for romance. Take a sunset stroll by the lake, enjoy a candlelit dinner or snuggle up by a roaring fire. If you are thinking of popping the question there are any number of romantic viewpoints to choose from and you can even have your rings made right here in Keswick at Fultons Lakes Jewellery works.

Back to Nature

You only need to step outside the door and nature is all around you. Whatever the time of year, nature’s beauty is simply breathtaking. Enjoy the birdsong in Spring and Summer or visit later in the year to see the spectacular Autumn colours. There is plenty of wildlife around too, you never know what you might see when out for a walk. Perhaps a red squirrel or deer. Take a trip to Whinlatter Forest, Dodd Wood or Dubwath Silver Meadows nature reserve, all of which are known for their varied wildlife.

Culture and Heritage

You'll find culture and heritage in abundance in and around Keswick and there are plenty of places that you can visit to find out more. Take a trip to Castlerigg Stone Circle or the Keswick Museum. Learn about the history of pencil manufacture in Keswick at Derwent Pencil Museum or visit the the poetry walk in the gardens at Mirehouse. The Victorian veranda houses a changing display of poems marking Mirehouse's literary connections. For something a bit different there is the Threlkeld Quarry and Mining Museum, a  comprehensive geological and mining museum.

Foodie

There is rarely a need to find an excuse whilst on holiday to enjoy the finer things in life. Keswick and the surrounding villages offer a wide range of excellent eateries. Whether you are looking for tea and a scone, fine dining or anything in between you won’t be disappointed. If you’re staying in one of our local hotels or guest houses you are sure to start the day well with a delicious home cooked breakfast. Many of our cafes and restaurants pride themselves on using locally sourced produce of the highest quality. Don’t forget that we have our very own brewery in Keswick whilst the Lakes Distillery is only a stones throw away on the shores of Bassenthwaite Lake. At both you can enjoy a tour, sample their produce and purchase some to take home from their well-stocked shops.
