Keswick Choral Society Spring Concert 2023

The town’s long-established Keswick Choral Society is looking forward to its annual Spring concert, to take place on 22 April. This year the Society has chosen a programme of popular choral classics.

The forthcoming coronation of King Charles III is to be marked by a performance of “Zadok the Priest”, the stirring anthem composed by Handel for the coronation of 1727 and sung at all coronations since.

The very popular “Requiem” by Gabriel Fauré will be particularly welcomed by some as an opportunity to meditate on the difficulties and losses caused by the Covid pandemic, and to consider our recovery from it.

Edward Elgar’s vigorous large-scale anthem “Give Unto the Lord” is powerfully expressive and its wide dynamic range will be enhanced by the excellent acoustics of the venue, St John’s Church, Ambleside Road, CA12 4DD.

Among the other items, on a lighter note are George Shearing’s jazzy “Songs and Sonnets” from Shakespeare.

The singers will be joined by Cumbrian soloists Tracie Penwarden, soprano, and Paul im Thurn, bass. Jordan English, assistant organist at St Giles Cathedral, Edinburgh, will accompany on piano and organ. The conductor is to be the Society’s Musical Director, Ian Hare.

Saturday 22nd April, 7:30pm at St John's Church, Keswick, CA12 4DD.

Tickets may be obtained from members, Eventbrite, and Bookends on Main Street. These qualify for a discounted price of £12; on the door the ticket price will be £15. A full programme is included.
