CUMBRIAN CHARITY SEEKS RUNNERS TO CHAMPION THEM IN THE GREAT NORTH RUN

The Lake District Calvert Trust are seeking ten individuals to take on the world’s greatest half marathon. The Great North Run takes place on Sunday 8 September 2024 and the Cumbrian charity has secured ten coveted places.

Famous for its inclusive atmosphere, unbeatable on-route entertainment and warm Geordie welcome, not to mention the millions raised each year for worthy causes, Great North Run magic can be hard to understand – until you’ve experienced it for yourself on the Newcastle to South Shields route.

Starting just outside the centre of Newcastle before crossing the famous Tyne Bridge into the borough of Gateshead, the race passes through some of the region’s most well-known suburbs before reaching the picturesque South Shields coast. Runners famously long for the sight of the sea as that means they have just over one mile to go!

Each year the Lake District Calvert Trust works with experienced and novice athletes alike to support them in their quest to take part in a running event in support of the charity.

A whopping £10,000 of that was raised by seven Great North Run participants last year! That’s enough to fund the refurbishment and renovation of one the centre’s highly specialist bedrooms which help to accommodate over 3000 guests each year – some of whom live with the most profoundly complex disabilities and would struggle to come on holiday without these extensive adaptations.

Julia Metcalf, Fundraising Officer commented:

“Our Cumbrian Calvert supporters are just phenomenal with their support! So we’re really hoping we can find ten keen individuals for this year’s race. We’d equally love to hear from groups of running friends or perhaps even a local business who might like to use the training and run itself as invaluable team-bonding time.”

The Calvert team will work closely with runners to help maximise their fundraising efforts and spread the word of their impressive feat. To sign up or find out more about running the Great North Runin aid of the Lake District Calvert Trust, please visit www.calvertlakes.org.uk/fundraise-for-us/
