Borrowdale Hotel Shortlisted for 'Large Hotel of the Year' in the Prestigious Cumbria Tourism Awards 2024

The Borrowdale Hotel, a renowned 4-star historic country hotel nestled amidst the breathtaking landscapes of the Lake District, is thrilled to announce it has been shortlisted as a finalist for the esteemed 'Large Hotel of the Year' award in the Cumbria Tourism Awards 2024.

Boasting a rich heritage dating back to 1866, the Borrowdale Hotel has long been celebrated for its exceptional service and timeless charm. In a testament to its commitment to continuous improvement, the hotel recently underwent a transformative ground floor refurbishment, investing over £1 million to seamlessly blend modern amenities with its historic allure.

The refurbishment saw the introduction of modernised spaces while preserving the hotel's distinctive character. Notable enhancements include the addition of private balconies to select bedrooms, offering guests stunning vistas of the surrounding fells. Furthermore, the hotel unveiled a state-of-the-art kitchen equipped with cutting-edge appliances and sustainable technologies.

Adding to the culinary prestige of the Borrowdale Hotel is the appointment of Tristan Prudden, a Gordon Ramsay-trained chef renowned for his expertise in game cuisine. With accolades including a prestigious Cordon Bleu Diploma and winner of ‘Champion of Champions’ at the 2018 Eat Game Awards, Chef Prudden brings a wealth of experience and innovation to the hotel's meal offerings.

"We are delighted to welcome Chef Prudden to our team," remarked Dani Hope, Director of Lake District Hotels. "His culinary prowess and dedication to excellence perfectly align with our commitment to providing guests with an unforgettable experience."

In addition to its culinary delights, the Borrowdale Hotel offers an array of amenities that capture the essence of luxury and relaxation. Guests can indulge in sumptuous Sunday lunches with meats carved at the table and served from the hotel’s iconic silver service carving trolley. The hotel's walk-in wine cellar and tasting room is also an impressive offering, showcasing a curated selection of over 175 wines and champagnes.

Beyond its physical offerings, the Borrowdale Hotel takes pride in its exceptional team members, many of whom have dedicated decades to the Lake District Hotels Group. Maria Quigley, the hotel’s General Manager was promoted to the position in 2023 after 20 years of working for the Lake District Hotels Group. With low staff turnover rates significantly below the industry standard, the hotel fosters a culture of longevity and excellence.

"We are honoured to be recognised among the best in Cumbria's vibrant tourism industry," said Maria Quigley, General Manager of the Borrowdale Hotel. "This nomination is a testament to the dedication of our team and the ongoing appeal of the Borrowdale Hotel as a leading destination in the Lake District."

The Borrowdale Hotel eagerly anticipates the results of the Cumbria Tourism Awards, where it competes alongside esteemed establishments such as the North Lakes Hotel in Penrith and The Swan Hotel at Newby Bridge.

All finalists now face another round of judging, with the winners of each category being officially announced at a black-tie celebration ceremony being held on Tuesday 2nd July at the Castle Green Hotel in Kendal.
