Sports Nutrition Advice From Lucy At The Edwardene*

Many of our guests in The Lake District are coming to enjoy endurance sports such as fell running, ultras, triathlons and sportives. Your food choices when preparing for these events have never been more important. Nutritious food provides vital fuel to power our health and wellbeing and help us reach our full potential.

For guests undertaking endurance activities one of our recommendations is our special raspberry and chocolate overnight oats. This is made with kefir, as well as chia and hemp seeds, to provide a gut friendly, high protein and slow carb releasing option to fuel your day.

Why would we recommend this? Well, Kefir is a cultured fermented milk drink, traditionally made with goats milk and living kefir ‘grains’ which are combinations of living good gut bacteria (probiotics) and yeast. This helps to replenish the good guys in your gut!! It is also a good source of protein.

Oats are high in carbohydrates, and when soaked overnight become starch resistant. These are digested in the small intestine and then ferment in the large intestine. As the fibres ferment, they act as a prebiotic and feed the good gut bacteria.

Hemp and chia seeds are rich in disease-fighting antioxidants. Both contain omega-3 fatty acids and protein, though hemp seeds provide a higher amount. Chia seeds and raspberries also contain high fibre, which can support regularity, blood sugar management, heart health, and satiety.

As a Guest House it’s also important to accommodate guests with special dietary needs. These could include dietary requirements and restrictions such as gluten free, dairy free, vegan, nut free, low carb etc.

There are an increasing number of guests asking for a specific diet to be catered for when they come and stay at a B&B. This may be due to food allergies, which are becoming more common. Or it could be because of personal or religious beliefs, medical reasons to follow a specific diet, or pregnancy.

The Lake District is a popular year round destination. During large events accommodation gets booked out early. Don’t miss your opportunity to book somewhere with the right type of breakfast to fuel your day.
