A Guide To Winter In Keswick
Winter is coming around fast now - we can’t wait. We’re lucky that every season is great in Keswick, but winter is truly special, with beautiful scenes, tonnes of Christmas spirit, and much more. Keep reading to find out what Keswick has in store for you this winter.
Weather and Temperature
The Lakes is known for its fluctuating temperature but, in the winter, you can count on Keswick to be one thing: chilly. We still have beautiful sunny days and gorgeous skies but, through the winter, the average temperatures are:
December: 4°C, January: 5 °C, February: 4°C, March: 6°C
So, you’ll definitely need to bring your winter coat and, in true Lakes style, make sure you bring an umbrella, too! If you do get caught in the rain, here’s our guide to Things To Do In Keswick When It’s Raining.
Christmas in Keswick
The most wonderful time of the year happens to be one of the most wonderful times in Keswick, too - we have so much going on over Christmas year upon year, so here’s a quick run down of just some of the things you can do in Keswick during the Christmas period.
Keswick Live Advent
If you haven’t heard of Keswick Live Advent before, it’s where, in each day of advent, a shop or business’ window in Keswick is illuminated by lighting and a festive theme, bringing you one-off events, promotions, and annual favourites.
This year, you can look forward to Keswick Victorian Fayre in the Market Square (1st December), Brewery Beer Tasting at Keswick Brewery (11th December), and Winter-Warming Hot Drinks at Oxfam (16th). You can see what's happening every day of advent in Keswick here.
Keswick Victorian Fayre
Always a very popular event which raises lots of money for charities both local and national the Keswick Victorian Fayre takes place on Sunday 1st December 2019. Over 30 charity stalls selling a selection of crafts, produce, festive food and drinks plus games, tombolas and raffles. Plus free live entertainment on stage in the Market Place and Packhorse Court. Whilst you're in Keswick enjoying the atmosphere of the fayre it's a great opportunity to do some Christmas shopping in our lovely shops.
Whinlatter Christmas Welly Walk
Whinlatter Forest is brilliant at putting on family-friendly events, and this festive walk is so exciting for children. Come along to Whinlatter Pass on 14th & 15th December at 1 pm, wrap up warm - and don’t forget your wellies! - for this lovely walk along the Gruffalo trail, where you can expect Christmas decorations, Christmas songs, and lots more festive fun.
Chrimb-O! Fun Christmas Orienteering
On 30th November from 11 am - 1 pm, Whinlatter Forest is going to be putting on Chrimb-O! Fun Christmas Orienteering competition where the prize is… a 6 ft Christmas tree! The event consists of two orienteering courses: Elves, which is 1.5 k long, and Reindeer, which is 3 k long. The entry fee is £5 per family.
If you want to stay indoors as much as possible during the winter months, we don’t really blame you and, luckily, Keswick has a huge amount of indoor events activities for you to enjoy during the winter.
Keswick Alhambra Cinema
Keswick Alhambra Cinema, an iconic and historic venue in Keswick, has all sorts of wonderful film showings, from family friendly to otherwise. This winter, you can look forward to films such as Frozen II, Le Mans ‘66, and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
A Christmas Carol - Theatre By The Lake
If you’re looking for a classic Christmas treat this winter, Theatre By The Lake is bringing you A Christmas Carol! From 22nd November - 11th January, you’ll be able to catch 'A Christmas Carol' in Keswick, and tickets start from £10. Follow the story of Ebenezer Scrooge in this much-loved Dickens tale.
Keswick Film Festival
From 27th February - 1st March 2020, Keswick Film Festival will be showing over 30 films in Keswick. This film festival is now in its 21st year and, for a flavour of what it has in store, you can take a look back at the 2019 Keswick Film Festival here.
Come rain or shine, we all need to get out and about so, even when it’s cold outside, Keswick has lots of activities on offer that will make braving the elements worth it!
Keswick Ghost Walks
Keswick Ghost Walks, brought to you by Lakeland Hauntings, is a thrilling experience which lasts around an hour and a half. You may be surprised to know that, in amongst all the stunning scenery and fascinating history, Keswick also has a history of ‘murder, intrigue, and tortured souls’.
Follow ‘The Lady’ on a walk that begins at The Moot Hall. These walks are designed for an adult audience but can usually be accessible for children aged 10 and older.
On the Fells
Walking the fells in the summer can be a lovely experience, and it can certainly be lovely in the winter, too - you just need to prepare more. To find out how to keep yourself safe on the fells this winter take a look at this article from Lake District National Park. Have a look at our walking page for some ideas - we have some lovely low-level routes ideal for winter with fantastic views up to the often snow-capped fells. One of my favourite short walks in winter is this Keswick to Applethwaite and Millbeck route which has some stunning views.
Winter is approaching really quickly now and we’d love to see you in Keswick during that time. For more information on what to see and do in Keswick, including where to stay, eat, and drink, take a look around our website.
