Lake District Hotels Ltd. Announce Charity Of The Year
Over the last four years, Lake District Hotels Ltd. have asked the public to nominate a charity of the year to reap the benefits from their fundraising activities; first put to practise in 2016, the local hotel group have raised just short of £50,000 for three local well deserving causes – Amy’s Care, Blood Bikes Cumbria and Keswick School.
From September 2019 through to March 2020 all fundraising events from the hotel groups six hotels (Lodore Falls Hotel & Spa and Borrowdale Hotel in the Borrowdale valley, Inn on the Square, Skiddaw Hotel & Kings Arms Hotel in Keswick, and Inn on the Lake on Ullswater) will be directed towards Keswick Scouts, to help towards the refurbishment of Ashness Hut.
Originally a chicken shed, Ashness Hut was donated to Keswick Scouts, along with the land which it sits just over 70 years ago, with the aim to provide a cost-effective place to stay for former evacuees and other underprivileged post-war children. Today the hut is in desperate need of renovation, however, it is still used as part of a varied programme of activities by 93 young scouts.
Keswick Scouts has been providing adventure, opportunity and life skills to young people for almost 110 years, and it can't happen without support from the local and wider community, through the many volunteers who give their time each week or those that provide financial support to ensure the club can continue to provide fun and low cost activities.
Dani Hope, Director for Lake District Hotels Ltd. commented, “we are excited to help towards the refurbishment of Ashness Hut, which we hope will make a real difference to Keswick Scouts. We feel very privileged to be in a position where we can contribute towards helping a local charity such as this continue into the future."
Jonny Winter, Assistant Scout Leader & Group Watersports Co-ordinator commented, “Ashness Hut is a fabulous resource, even though it's just a few miles outside the town it feels like a world apart. It's perfect for taking the young people back to nature, be it through fire-lighting, bushcraft and outdoor cooking sessions, during the week or multi-day camps where we use the hut as a base to explore the local countryside - some of my favourite memories are of the adventures I had there myself as a scout!”
