Details

Friday 14 September – 28 October 2018. Showcasing the most innovative and exciting craft practice in the UK today, the Woman’s Hour Craft Prize exhibition from the V&A marks the 70th anniversary of BBC Woman’s Hour. A collaboration between the V&A, BBC Radio 4 and the Crafts Council, this is the most comprehensive prize of its kind. Ceramicist Phoebe Cummings was named the winner on BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour broadcast live from the V&A on 8 November 2017. She was awarded a prize of £10,000.

Traditional materials and historic skills meet new techniques and challenging ideas in a richly varied, stunning and very contemporary show. The 12 finalists show the broad spectrum of craft practice today, from woven willow and darned jumpers to a bespoke bicycle and an intricate jewellery box. As well as being beautiful and technically excellent, the show explores the decline of UK manufacturing, advances in medicine and personal stories of loss and memory.

The artists in the exhibition are Laura Ellen Bacon (willow weaving), Alison Britton (ceramics), Neil Brownsword (ceramics and installation), Lin Cheung (jewellery), Phoebe Cummings (clay sculpture), Caren Hartley (metalwork), Peter Marigold (cabinet making), Celia Pym (wool/ repair), Romillly Saumarez Smith (jewellery), Andrea Walsh (ceramics), Emma Woffenden (glass) and Laura Youngson Coll (vellum/scupture). Exhibition tour organised by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. The Woman’s Hour Craft Prize is in association with BBC Radio 4 and the Crafts Council.

Alongside the Woman’s Hour Craft Prize, there will also be a small exhibition that puts a spotlight on northern makers. Curated by Rheged specifically to coincide with the Woman’s Hour Craft Prize, it is a snapshot of craft and design in the north right now, featuring makers who live and work in the North of England, and Scotland. The exhibition includes Lorna Singleton (weaving), Jessica Harrison (ceramics), Joan and Jack Hardie (3d printed ceramics), Megan Randall (site specific ceramic installation) and Novocastrian (metalwork/furniture).
