Details

London. 1918. Why did it take so insufferably long for women to get the vote? Revolting Women tells the Suffrage story through the eyes of a less well-known Pankhurst, Sylvia, who fought for the vote alongside working women in the East End. Sylvia meets Lettie Turner and together they push to Parliament, to bend the ear of the Cabinet. A story of absolute commitment or dangerous obsession? Full of political satire, song and more suffrage societies than you can shake a stick at, Revolting Women unravels a contentious and momentous movement in history! It will be informative and entertaining at the same time.

The play is performed by Mikron Theatre, which is officially one of the country’s leading arts organisations for the Arts Council’s 2018-22 funding period. Mikron was founded in 1972, 2018 marks Mikron’s 47th year of touring professional theatre and in this season they will be performing at 130 venues! The Mikron seed was sewn in 1963 when Mike Lucas, a jobbing actor, realised that his mission was to take theatre to unusual venues and new audiences outside of London. It was during a boating holiday that the truly unique aspect of Mikron came to be. Having spent many hours enjoying the atmospheres of the canalside pubs and sampling their local brews, Mike realised that travelling by canal would really give his company a way to reach audiences and venues that may be too “out of the way” for regular touring companies. So in 1972 Mikron took the plunge and toured our first play written for the waterways; “Still Waters”. Today, they still tour by narrowboat in the Summer, performing in all kinds of buildings. In the Spring and Autumn they tour by road.

This year is the first time they have visited Threlkeld. They will be performing Revolting Women on Thursday 4th October at 7:30pm. Bar and Box Office from 7pm.. Tickets: Adult £13; Family Ticket £35 (2 adults and up to 3 children (under 16s)). Tickets available from the Village Hall Coffee Shop or on-line at www.threlkeldvillagehall.org/whats-on
