Our Evening in Abraham's Cafe on the 30th of June is with Author and Alpinist John Porter.
An insight into the life of Alex Macintyre and the birth of light and fast alpinism.
Our speaker John Porter’s book ‘One Day as a Tiger’ was has won numerous awards worldwide including the Grand Prize at the Banff Mountain Book Festival 2014.
The subject of the book, Alex McIntyre, was an apprentice of Porter’s who turned into a climbing guru and cult figure who helped change the shape of alpinism. Reinhold Messner described Alex as; “the best and purist alpinist in the Himalaya.” He died at 28 on the South Face of Annapurna. Porter’s lecture “A Brief Golden Light” goes beyond the story of McIntyre to describe the achievements, chaotic lives, remarkable writing and fatal inspiration of climbing companions including Pete Boardman, Joe Tasker and Alan Rouse; a generation that one American commentator concluded; “nearly climbed itself into extinction.” John Porter is the President of the Alpine Club, the oldest and most distinguished mountaineering club in the world.
