Threlkeld is located off the A66 in Cumbria, 4 miles west of Keswick and 13 miles east of Penrith. From Penrith, junction 40 on the M6, follow signs to Keswick and after 13 miles turn right into Threlkeld Village. Do not follow your Sat Nav after this point - the Village Hall is located 0.5 mile along on the left hand side. From Keswick follow signs to Penrith and after 4 miles take the first left signposted Threlkeld. The Village Hall is 0.5 mile along on the right hand side.

Penrith2Kendal Arc is one of the largest Landscape Recovery Projects in the country, extending to more than 16,000 hectares and involving more than 30 farmers and landowners. Landscape Recovery is the top tier of the government’s farming support and nature recovery scheme. It is designed to restore nature at scale by bringing multiple farmers and landowners together, providing a reliable 20-year income stream to fund land management that improves the natural environment for wildlife and people.  Lee Schofield, author Wild Fell, will talk about this ambitious project, for which he is the Nature Recovery Lead. In May 2024, the Penrith2Kendal Arc project started its two-year development phase, providing staff resource to work up ambitious plans for land management, community engagement, access improvement, monitoring, funding and governance. These plans will be implemented over a 20-year delivery phase, which should commence in Spring 2026.     

During this development phase, managed through a partnership with Lowther Farming Partnership and  Cumbria Connect , the project team is working with all 30+ farmers and landowners to explore options for large-scale, ambitious nature restoration that will enhance the condition and connectivity of a range of important habitats, including woodlands, wood pasture, rivers and floodplains, hay meadows and peatlands. Planning and consultation will also be carried out to assess whether Water Voles, Black Grouse, Pine Martens and a range of other missing species can be returned to the landscape.  

Covering more than 16,000 hectares, the Penrith to Kendal Arc project area covers multiple watersheds and habitats and supports a huge array of wildlife. Most of the project lies within the Lake District National Park, arguably England’s most spectacular and iconic landscape.
