A Ceilidh with Cumbrian group Bald Mountain String Band to celebrate 250 years of St Mary’s Church in Threlkeld. Includes raffle and short quiz about the last 250years, plus nibbly bits and cake on sale. Great music and dancing with an excellent caller. No experience required! Extensive repertoire of music from the British Isles and traditional dances.
This ceilidh is supporting St Mary’s church in Threlkeld which has been at the centre of village life for many centuries. It was last refurbished 250 years ago. We want to celebrate this in style! However, now the church needs to be repaired and refreshed for the next couple of hundred years. The church is undertaking repairs and installing a new heating system (air source heat pump for sustainability) and insulation. There will also be provision of a toilet and kitchen and the removal of the centre pews to give a flexible space for activities. The profits from this ceilidh will go towards this project.
Bald Mountain String Band started in the 60s as the Berkshire Tragedy, Peter and Chris, along with concertina and melodeon player, and clog dancer, Ian Dunmur, played together until Chris and Peter moved to the Lakes in 1987. They are now a family band, joined by daughter Jo and her husband Mick. Hence, Bald Mountain String Band was born. Peter and Jo play fiddles, Mick the ukulele and percussion and Chris on guitar and bass guitar.
Throughout this long association they have played traditional music gleaned from all over the British Isles and have a wonderfully extensive repertoire of tunes for traditional dances. Added to that are melodies just for listening to. The caller, Sally Hardaker, has a variety of interesting dances, some to challenge regular dancers and a great deal of patience for groups less quick to pick up the moves. She is also a flautist and enjoys any opportunity to play with the band. Friday 31st July 7:30pm, Bar and Box Office from 6:45pm. Tickets £12 (£6 under 18) from https://threlkeldvillagehall.org/
