Hornfels Brass Quartet is a Cumbrian ensemble comprising of experienced musicians who have played with some of the top brass bands in the UK. Their repertoire encompasses concerts, recitals, competitions and a variety of other events. The quartet was formed after the gauntlet was thrown down by the former conductor of North Lakes Brass, Gareth Sykes after a discussion on how to best develop the best players’ abilities further. A quartet is what the best musicians form from the best bands in the world to keep their skills honed; so this is what Andy did, and here is the Hornfels Brass Quartet. The quartet comprises Jon Sanderson (trumpet/cornet/flugel horn), Craig Woods (trombone), Andy Cannon (euphonium/baritone) and Graham Edmands tuba).
Jon is a highly experienced championship level musician, having had an illustrious life in the brass band world, playing with the likes of Grimethorpe Colliery Band and Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band. He is a versatile musician and arranger who also plays for Kewsick’s headliner group, The Kasios.
Craig has played with top brass bands such as Strata Brass in Yorkshire and is currently the principle trombone with North Lakes Brass, Keswick’s very own competition brass band. As well as running West View Guest House with his wife Heather and working in IT, Craig also stars in the Kasios alongside Jon.
Andy has reignited his life as a brass musician after a successful career as a headteacher where he created and ran a school brass band in Carlisle. Andy played for the giant killing Marple Band before moving to Cumbria. He is solo euphonium for North Lakes Brass, is guest soloist for many Cumbrian brass bands and for the last couple of years has been playing with The Leyland Band, currently one of the top bands in the world. He’s just returned from playing with The Leyland Band in the magnificent Royal Albert Hall.
Graham grew up playing with The Salvation Army bands. He has played with the International Staff Band and currently is ‘Player of the Year’ with North Lakes Brass band. Graham lives in Threlkeld with his wife Kaytie who is a music teacher and leader of Keswick’s training bands.
