Accessible only by foot, bike or National Trust 4x4, discover one of the Lakes most quirky yet fascinating secrets located in the stunning Coledale Valley, near Keswick - you’ll love it even if you’re not sure mining is quite your thing! Missed by most people, the last mineral mine to be worked in the Lake District has been lovingly restored and cared for by volunteers. A guided tour allows you to explore the above-ground processing mill and associated remains - it’s as if the miners had just left for the day. Once a hive of industry, the mining of lead, zinc and barites took place at Force Crag for over 200 years, ceasing in 1990. History, engineering, geology, archaeology and an awesome setting, Force Crag Mine has it all. Meet at Force Crag Mine at the head of the Coledale Valley (Grid Ref 198 216) or, meet at the Noble Knott car park (see below) for a lift via National Trust transport. Once on site the tour takes place partly outside on rough ground and involves a walk up hill but it does not take you underground. Make your own way to the site on foot or by bike. If you'd like a lift in National Trust transport please call ahead on the number below to book a timeslot and guarantee your space in the vehicle. We pick up from the Noble Knott forestry commission car park located part way up Whinlatter Pass opposite the Bassenthwaite Lake viewing layby (grid ref 223 244). The transport leaves ten minutes past the hour starting at 10.10am. Last pick up is 3.10pm. Tours run regularly throughout the day, the first one starts at 10.30am, the last one at 3pm. Each tour lasts about an hour. Not suitable for small children or children that need to be carried; all youngsters to be accompanied by an adult. Porta loos available at the mine on tour days. Dogs are welcome, but are not permitted on the tour of the mill building. Sturdy footwear and warm and waterproof clothing may well be necessary. Also bring along any refreshments you might want.
