Details

Join Wainwright archivist Chris Butterfield and Richard Else, producer of the original BBC Wainwright TV series, for a truly special event marking the 40th anniversary of that unforgettable autumn day in 1985 when Wainwright returned to Haystacks. This is a rare opportunity to retrace his steps with the very producer who captured the moment on film.

As we visit the original filming locations around Innominate Tarn, Richard will share personal recollections from that historic day, bringing to life the behind-the-scenes stories of Wainwright’s final visit to his most cherished fell. Chris will reveal the exact filming locations, allowing attendees to stand where Wainwright once stood and take in the same views that meant so much to him. In a remarkable touch of continuity, Richard will also be using the same film camera he once used to photograph Wainwright on Haystacks decades ago.

We will also take a moment to reflect on the poignant journey of Andrew Nichol, Wainwright’s publisher, who travelled to Haystacks with the Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team to pay tribute to his old friend. Sadly, Andrew passed away just months later, but his moving documentary from that day is now being shown at the Wainwright exhibition at The Armitt, Ambleside.

The day concludes with an intimate joint talk by Richard Else and Chris Butterfield, held at the Glaramara Hotel in Borrowdale from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. This will include rare film footage and discussion, offering further insight into Wainwright’s work and the significance of his final visit to Haystacks. Attendees also have the option to stay overnight at the hotel and/or enjoy an evening meal.

This event is strictly limited to 30 participants, ensuring an exclusive and personal experience for those who share a deep appreciation for Wainwright’s work.
