Inspired by the textures, colours of the Cumbrian landscape, participants will experiment with a range of
abstract painting and mark making techniques, culminating in the production of a final canvas painting.
Outdoor sketches in Fitz park, opposite Makers Mill, will act as the initial structure for the painting, as we
transform observations of the real world into bold and expressive abstract compositions.
We'll start out with quick sketching in Fitz Park, then move inside to experiment with techniques, before
progressing to a final finished painting. Participants will use acrylic paint and a range of brushes alongside
alternative mark making devices.
All equipment will be provided and you will go home with a final canvas painting. Please bring an apron to protect clothes.

Hamish is local artist and draws inspiration from his surroundings, exploring how the natural world can
inspire the mark making and compositions of his paintings. He gained an MA Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art in 2013 and was nominated for artist of the year at Rheged, 2016. In November 2019 he was artist in residence at Makers Mill, Keswick.
