Light pollution is growing at 2% each year, twice the rate of population growth. New research suggests this could be as much as 10%. The benefits of darkness are well documented, increasing human wellbeing and supporting ecological systems to thrive.
Scientists warn that pollution caused by excessive lighting is altering the night cycle of people, animals and plants and preventing the sky observation. We need to take immediate action.
Unlike other anthropogenic challenges, the reduction of light, and light pollution can have an immediate impact.
Ian’s talk, with the assistance of a little audience participation, explores common causes of light pollution and highlights simple measures we can all take to reduce or eliminate excessive lighting.
Along the way we’ll also look at way in which we can measure and monitor the quality of our night sky.
