‘Ed Hillary once said that no-one would be interested in Everest again, once it was climbed. How wrong he was! I’m thrilled to be coming to the beautiful Lakes to see this intriguing Everest drama played out on stage.’ Rebecca Stephens MBE

On 17th May 1993, Rebecca Stephens became the first British woman to climb Everest. The following year she went on to become the first British woman to scale the Seven Summits, the highest mountain on each of the seven continents. Her interest in climbing was ignited when, in her late twenties, she accompanied an Anglo-American expedition on Everest’s North East Ridge in 1989.

Beginning her career as a journalist, Rebecca has written articles for several publication including The Financial Times, The Independent and The Mail on Sunday. Her role as a reporter exploring the question ‘Why do Climbers Climb?’ ignited her passion for climbing, and she continues to write books and articles about her experiences in the outdoors. Rebecca is a trustee for The Himalayan Trust UK, founded by Sir Edmund Hillary, a non-profit organisation that aims to support the people of Nepal and give back to communities that facilitate mountaineering in the Himalayas. She also has her own business Seven Summits Performance Limited that offers coaching, motivational talks, workshops and she leads treks in the Himalayas and Africa.

Matt is himself a passionate mountaineer and runs both a local guiding business and an international one, LMG Treks and Expeditions that takes people to Everest Base Camp, so he knows what he’s talking about!
