Brought to you by the Cumbria Amenity Trust Mining History Society and the National trust for Geoweek. Come and take a guided tour through the Goldscope Mine and learn all about it's long running history.

During the reign of Elizabeth I miners came to Keswick from Germany under a Royal Warrant to establish a Copper Mining and Smelting operation around Keswick. They found the richest Copper veins in the Newlands Valley and named their new mine “God’s Blessing”. We now know this mine as Goldscope. These 16th Century German Miners turned a quiet valley into an important hive of industry, making Elizabethan England self sufficient in valuable copper, used to manufacture armaments, implements and utensils.

With Mark Hatton from the Cumbria Amenity Trust Mining History Society as your guide, you will see the work done by these men 450 years ago and discover why the mines were so important to Queen Elizabeth I. And learn about how the miners were much loved by local women but badly treated by the landowner and local men, leading to a brutal murder on the streets of Keswick in 1566, eventually contributing to the famous armed uprising against Elizabeth I dubbed the ‘Rising of the North’.

For history and geology buffs alike or for anyone who loves a day out in the Lakes, this is an event you won't want to miss
