Chapelfield Cottage

Our cottage has one double and one single bedroom and would sleep up to three adults. There is also a comfortable lounge, kitchen and bathroom. It is very relaxing and has been awarded an English Tourist Board 4-star rating.

Facilities include TV, video & DVD player, CD/radio, free WiFi, washer/drier and fridge/freezer. The cottage is in good decorative order, with a fine bathroom with bath & shower, and modern kitchen. Guests staying here may share use of the lovely garden and there is parking for up to two cars.

Chapel Field is set in the heart of the Borrowdale Valley, where the Cumbria Way crosses the Coast-to-Coast walk, with wonderful views of the surrounding fells. With two lovely bedrooms, our cottage offers very comfortable and relaxing self-catering accommodation for up to three people and is ideally situated for exploring this beautiful area.

Whether you are content with low-level riverside strolls or are a more adventurous climber of fells there is an ample choice of walks just from the doorstep. Derwentwater is 3 miles away and the town of Keswick with all its visitor attractions is a mere 6½ miles. There is a shop, two pubs and restaurants within easy walking distance. Without needing to use a car or bus (but if you need it, the stop is just outside our gate) there is a myriad of beautiful walks in all directions, from the beautiful Langstrath Valley up to the most strenuous hike you could wish for, including around 35 Wainwright summits. Nearby fells include Glaramara, Great Gable and High Spy. Scafell Pike and the Langdale Pikes are possibilities for the stronger walker and a short drive over the Honister Pass will take you to Buttermere and fells such as Wainwright's favourites of Haystacks and Pillar. As the crow flies there are 56 Wainwright summits within 5 miles, including Scafel Pike.

Chapel Field wildlife lovers will be thrilled to know we regularly see red squirrels, rabbits and a fascinating variety of birds in the garden. Other mammals also seen recently include badgers, deer and otters down by the nearby River Derwent.

Location

Your route of course will depend on where you are coming from, and most visitors will need to come via Penrith and Keswick. There are a choice of routes for Keswick:

From the South-east: take the M1 to join the M6 then up to Junction 40 for the A66 to Keswick;
From the South-west: take the M5 to the M6 then up to Junction 40 for the A66 to Keswick;
From the North-west: take the M6 down to junction 40 for the A66 to Keswick;
From the North-east or South-east: the A1 to Scotch Corner then A66 to Keswick.
Once you arrive at Keswick, Borrowdale is well signposted via the B5289 and it's a delightful 6½ miles to Chapel Field. The road is narrow and twisty so take care as the wonderful views and the beauty of the valley are likely to distract the driver.

Six miles out Keswick you will come to Rosthwaite, where the road narrows near by the Scafell Hotel, on the left. Chapel Field is just a quarter mile further down the road. You will see the junction to Stonethwaite on the left and a large bus shelter opposite you: our front gate is just to the left of the shelter (see below).
