Stunningly located overlooking Derwent Water, our hostel is a lovely 220 year old Georgian mansion popular with families, individuals and groups. Affordable accommodation in an amazing setting, large grounds and an impressive waterfall   The views are inspirational at any time of the year.  We are only 2 miles from Keswick with good transport links.


Derwentwater Youth Hostel is a great base for individuals, families, groups, challenge events and conferences.  The hostel has plenty of lounges and games rooms. It is licensed and offers a full meal service with a good reputation for home -made food and the ability to cater for special diets. You can also self-cater and we also have a drying room, laundry, and cycle shed.  The rooms are spacious with period features and the bedrooms range in size from 4 to10 bunks with one magnificent 22 bed room. The grounds are teeming with wildlife, with plenty of space for children to play, football goals, orienteering courses, picnic tables and ample parking.

Borrowdale has something for everyone, walks along the lake shore, challenging mountains, water sports, mountain biking, climbing, gorge scrambling and tourist attractions. The C2C route passes close by.  Must do days out include taking the Keswick Launch to the other side of the lake for a walk up Cat Bells and a walk to Watendlath via Surprise View.

By Road: M6 junction 40 at Penrith. A66 to Keswick
Follow signs to Borrowdale (B5289)
We are 2 miles south of Keswick 100m after the junction to Watendlath

Local Transport Information: Traveline Tel: 0870 608 2 608 www.traveline.org.uk.
Nearest Rail Station: Penrith (20 miles).

Buses:  Penrith to Keswick (X4 & X5 - hourly).
Keswick to Derwentwater Youth Hostel (78 - hourly winter, half hourly July/August).
National Express run a service from London via Birmingham & Preston.

Cycle:   NCR 71 C2C at Keswick 2.3 miles then Keswick town centre and B5289.

By Boat:  From Keswick boat landing take the ferry to ‘Ashness Gate’, then a 100m walk to the hostel drive. Recommended!

  On Foot: The walk along the lake shore from Keswick is an excellent introduction to the area. There are various mountain routes as well.
