Details

Julie Felix was born in America and came to Britain in 1956, where she quickly achieved success as a folk singer. Within a decade she had a well-established career, filling the Albert Hall in 1965 and described as “Britain’s First Lady of Folk” by the Times. In 1966 Felix was resident singer on BBC ‘The Frost Report’ and then hosted her own shows on the BBC from 1968 to 1970. She had 2 singles chart hits with ‘If I Could’ and ‘Heaven is Here’. She has always had an interest in campaigning for peace, from acting as humanitarian ambassador for Christian Aid in 1965 to participating in a peace march through Central America in the 1980s. It was a dangerous march, and witnessing the suffering of the indigenous peoples of Latin America inspired Julie to start singing again after a break of a few years. She has continued to campaign for peace projects including protests against the war in the Gulf. Singer songwriter Steve Harley said of her “There are those among us who just have to play and sing; to whom there can be no question of quitting; to whom their work is not a job, but a calling. Julie Felix is one such musician.”
