Stephen Goodwin has 3 great local book guides in our shop, his latest is Winter Walks in the Lake District. The book is a collection of easy walks and climbs covering accessible routes via classic and lesser-known ridge lines across the Central, Southern, Northern and Eastern fells. Steve’s talk will cover his favourite routes from the book. The routes include accessible jaunts up Gowbarrow, High Rigg and Latrigg, Keswick’s ‘house mountain’ – an ideal spot to survey the snow cover on the bigger tops to the south; ascents of Helvellyn from the east and west, via classic and lesser-known ridgelines, or graded climbs on Browncove Crags and Nethermost Pike; high-level horseshoes above Haweswater and Langdale; and, of course, ascents of the classics – Scafell Pike, Blencathra, Great End – although not necessarily by the most travelled routes. Alongside advice on winter conditions and kit, each of the routes in this book features detailed introductions and directions, Ordnance Survey 1:25,000-scale maps, photo topos for the graded winter climbs where appropriate, and local information such as the best pubs and cafes. We will be serving nibble and drinks and all of Stephen's books will be available for purchase and autographs on the night. The evening will start at 6.00pm for a 6.30 to 8.30pm talk and an opportunity to ask questions at the end.
