Details

The acclaimed Phoenix Dance Theatre present a major new dance production, Windrush: Movement of the People, as part of their 2018 Mixed Programme. Shining a light on an important era of British history, the thrilling new dance piece celebrates the 70th anniversary of the arrival of SS Empire Windrush that bought the first Caribbean migrants to the UK. Choreographed by Artistic Director Sharon Watson, the work is a lively celebration of the rise of multicultural Britain and features an uplifting soundtrack from calypso, jazz and blues to ska, gospel and reggae. Audiences will also experience performances of Calyx, a new commission by emerging female choreographer Sandrine Monin that explores the themes of beauty, desire and decadence; and a revival of Shadows by Christopher Bruce OBE, now featured in the AQA GCSE Dance curriculum, and described by The Times as ‘emotive, traumatic and weighted with memory — or is it fear?’ ‘The Leeds-based company can pride itself on being one of Britain’s most enduring dance institutions… it’s never lost sight of its underlying brand – mixing the popular mainstream with the unexpected and unpredictable’, The Guardian. There will be a post show discussion after the performance.
