Kendal, Windermere & the Southern Lake District is bursting with culture and fascinating little gems to discover. There are the quaint cobbled yards of Kendal and Ulverston with speciality shops to be explored and you can delve into the past amongst the soaring monastic ruins of Furness Abbey located close to Barrow-in-Furness in the heart of the Lake District Peninsulas. Whilst in the area, visit the classic Edwardian resort of Grange-over-Sands - a little town with the charm of a bygone age and explore the rich maritime heritage of south Cumbria’s countryside and coast.
Straddling the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales and nestling amongst rolling hills lie the cobbled streets of Dentdale and neighbouring Sedbergh and Kirkby Lonsdale - small towns steeped in history and tradition.
A visit to Grasmere, Ambleside and Windermere is a must - small towns set in the heart of the Lake District National Park, surrounded by beautiful lakes and fells. The stunning scenery here inspired the literary greats William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter. The former homes of Wordsworth, Dove Cottage in Grasmere and Rydal Mount in nearby Rydal, are well worth a visit.
Call at Beatrix Potter's home at Hill Top, near Hawkshead. You can almost see Peter Rabbit dashing across the garden!
No holiday to the Lake District is complete without a relaxing cruise aboard one of the steamers on Windermere, England’s longest lake.
There's a wealth of places to visit - view the inspirational writings of John Ruskin displayed at Brantwood in Coniston, followed by tea taken on the terrace overlooking breathtaking Coniston Water and the famous fell, Coniston Old Man. If you still need more ideas, order a local guide book or make a telephone call to one of our friendly Tourist Information Centres for detailed advice.
