Keswick's Theatre by the Lake is situated on the shores of Derwentwater in one of the most picturesque locations in the country. It opened in 1999, replacing the old Blue Box Touring Theatre and was made possible by an Arts Council Lottery Fund Grant. The resident professional company offers a summer season of plays, a Christmas show and Easter production. The theatre also hosts a wide range of visiting drama, music, dance, talks, comedy and film.
Cockermouth's main arts venue is the Kirkgate Centre, a 125 seat theatre/cinema. Run by a charitable trust and volunteers it offers a range of drama, musical events, dance, films and exhibitions.
A little further afield the Carnegie Theatre in Workington and Rosehill Theatre in Whitehaven offer a varied programme of music, drama, films and shows.
Fans of the big screen can choose from the latest movie releases at the modern six screen multiplex Plaza in Workington or the more traditional surroundings of the Alhambra in Keswick, Zefirellis in Ambleside and the Alhambra in Penrith.
