Cockermouth

Cockermouth is an attractive market town with an impressive tree lined wide main street. It is located 20 minutes along the A66 from Keswick and approximately 40 minutes drive from J40 of the M6.

Cockermouth is famous as the birth place of William Wordsworth and his siter Dorothy. Wordsworth House, an elegant Georgian building situated on the wide main street, is open to the public under the care of the National Trust. It was saved from being demolished to make way for a bus station in 1939 and given to the National Trust in the same year. It contains furniture and pictures of the period. some of which belonged to the poet.

Cockermouth is home to a number of other attractions including Jennings Brewery and the Museum of Printing. The town centre is also an excellent place to browse around with a number of specialist shops, art galleries, arts and crafts and antique shops. There is also a wide variety of cafes, pubs and restaurants.

Cockermouth is served by the Penrith to Workington bus which travels via Keswick before arriving at Cockermouth. For bus timetables click here.

A wide variety of events take place throughout the year. A highlight is the Cockermouth Summer Festival but no less popular are the Georgian Fayre, the Cockermouth Beer Festival, the Malcolm Wilson Rally and the Cockermouth Carnival.
