THE EDWARDIAN CELLO ARRIVES ON THE STUDIO STAGE
Tuesday 6th Jul 2010 08:49:58
Theatre by the Lake has an event that will entertain classical music lovers and theatre goers alike in the studio theatre this month with The Edwardian Cello. Showing from Monday 19 until Wednesday 21 July at 8pm, with a matinée at 2pm on Wednesday 21 July, this is a show with a difference and should not be missed!
Billed as a cello recital and theatre piece rolled into one, travel back in time to the Edwardian era in this recreation of a typical musical evening from 1912 in the company of pianist and actor Michael Lunts and cellist Melanie Dennerly.
The evening allows the audience to hear some of the most beautiful music written for the cello as it might have been heard by contemporary audiences, in the context of a concert “in aid of The Titanic Relief Fund”. It is October 1912 and the great ship has recently sunk on its maiden voyage. The suffragettes are making their voices heard throughout the land, even in the peaceful environs of Great Tottering, whose Music Society is hosting tonight’s concert. The cello is becoming a more popular solo instrument on the back of such pieces as Saint-Saen’s The Swan, Mendelssohn’s Song without Words, and Elgar’s Salut d’ Amour, all of which feature in this nostalgic and witty musical entertainment recreating a bygone era. To top it off, Mr Lunts even promises a few vocal items from his extensive repertoire of comic songs from the period, including, of course some Gilbert and Sullivan.
Venerated performers Michael Lunts and Melanie Dennerly are well known to Keswick audiences. Theatre regulars will remember Michael from his appearances with singer and actress Susan Flannery in their musical revues More Tea, Vicar? and A Wilde Affair. He also performed a double bill of musical plays about Chopin at Theatre by the Lake in 2009, The Last Ballade and Winter in Majorca. Melanie has played with the Halle and Royal Philharmonic Orchestras, the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Manchester Camerata and is also a member of numerous string quartets.
Tickets for The Edwardian Cello are available by calling 017687 74411 or visiting www.theatrebythelake.com and cost £14.50 (discounts £1 off); £10. Don’t miss out on this brilliant production!
